The seed industry is mourning the death of Padma Shri Dr. Manmohan Attavar Chairman Indo-American Hybrid Seeds (India) Pvt. Ltd. on 12th Dec 2017. Dr. Manmohan Attavar was born on 12thJuly 1932. He obtained his M.Sc. (Agri) in 1961 from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and then proceeded for his Doctoral Programme in Plant Breeding and Genetics at Montana State University, USA. He underwent practical training in Commercial Plant Breeding at George. J. Ball. Inc., West Chicago and Pan American Seeds Co., Colorado, USA.
He returned to India in 1965 and set-up Indo-American Hybrid Seeds (IAHS) at Bangalore, with a global vision, dedicated to quality and service and continues to relentlessly pursue these ideals. Over the past five decades, under Dr. Attavar’s guidance, IAHS has grown from strength to strength, and is today a leading hybrid seed company in India.
He was the first Indian scientist to introduce environment-controlled greenhouses for commercial year-round seed production in India. Dr. Attavar recognized the tremendous untapped potential in the field of horticulture in India and was instrumental in actualizing the concept of ‘Lab-to-Land’ programme in agriculture.
Dr. Attavar’s contribution towards the improvement of vegetable crops and ornamental plants with modern technology is substantial. In this endeavour, he established an international standard Genetic Engineering Laboratory & a Commercial Tissue Culture Laboratory in 1987.
Dr. Attavar has been honoured with several laurels and awards for his outstanding contributions in the field of horticulture. A few among them are an Honorary Doctorate in 1990 from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, the Rajyotsava State Award in 1991,the Dr. M.H. Marigowda National Award in1995, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Special Award in 1995 for Lifetime Contribution for the development of horticulture, the prestigious Government of India Republic Day Civilian Honour of PADMASHRI in 1998 and the Karnataka Government Honour of the ‘Captains of Industry’ on the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations in 2006. “SADHAKA” award from Vishwa Tulu Sammelana held at Ujri, by Dharmadhakari Pujya Dharmastala Virendra Hegde in 2009, Premnath Agricultural Foundation award during International Conference on Horticulture in 2009, Life time contribution award at Indian Seeds Congress in 2010. The Executive Council of The Horticultural Society of India honoured him by conferring the Honorary Fellowship of the Society for the year 2010 for his immense contribution in Horticulture Development by Padma Vibhushan Dr.M.S.Swaminathan, during the 4th Indian Horticulture Congress held at New Delhi.
