Maize varieties are often bred for higher yields, but what if they could also improve soil health?

Researchers from CIMMYT, the University of Edinburgh, the James Hutton Institute and the University of Sheffield are researching the genetic potential of maize varieties to improve plant-associated microbial community development, carbon and nitrogen cycling processes, and increase the retention of organic soil matter. In the photo below, post-doc Lumbani Mwafulirwa at Edinburgh University is testing the effect of maize varieties from Zimbabwe on soil nutrient and organic matter processes.
